What will I learn?

Dive into field labs where you track stream flow, monitor watersheds, study soil and water interactions and learn how forests and water systems connect. From day one, you’ll be engaged in hands-on research, collecting data in the wild, analyzing how water moves through forest ecosystems and preparing yourself for a watershed-focused career in forestry and natural resources. In one of the top-ranked forestry programs in the nation for quality and value, your research takes you outside from day one as you study with world-class faculty. Whether in the U of I Experimental Forest, Pitkin Forest Nursery or at the McCall Field Campus along Payette Lake, our students learn in the diverse landscapes of Idaho and the Inland Northwest. As a forestry major with a hydrology and watershed management emphasis, you’ll study the impact of land management practices on hydrologic processes, water quality and riparian habitat with an emphasis on wildland watersheds. Accredited by the Society of American Foresters, U of I has trained forestry leaders for over 100 years. Graduates are in high demand with the forest industry and natural resource agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service and Idaho Department of Lands.
