What will I learn?

Why Earn Your BS in Psychology at Sacred Heart?

Develop an understanding of the theoretical perspectives and contributions of the schools of thought in psychology, and apply critical thinking as you analyze psychological theories and scientific research.

As a Psychology major, you will explore a variety of electives based on your interests, including psychological counseling, abnormal psychology, drugs and behavior, psychology of women, sports psychology, and more.

In the psychology program, you will also:

  • Identify, synthesize, and critique information for scientific research
  • Conduct all stages of scientific research in projects conducted by faculty members, the results of which are often published in professional journals
  • Have the opportunity to present research results at local, regional, and national conferences
  • Understand and demonstrate ethical principles in psychology
  • Have the chance to study abroad during the fall of your sophomore year at the SHU in Dingle campus in Ireland
  • Complete a semester-long internship in a setting that fits your career goals
  • Gain real-world experience through the community service component of several courses
  • Have the option to join the Psychology Club and Psi Chi, the international honor society for psychology majors

Accelerated Undergraduate Plans of Study

For students with very strong academic skills and ambitions for graduate school, we have created several accelerated pathways. Students can work with their academic advisors to follow these guidelines to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 3 years, including the prerequisites for these graduate programs.

  • 3+1 Sequence for Pre-MSIOP
  • 3+2 Sequence for Pre-OT
  • 3+3 Sequence for Pre-PT
  • 3+2 Sequence for Pre-MPH

Graduate prepared for a variety of careers and further study

Psychology majors are prepared for a variety of careers, including:

  • Marketing research
  • Human resources
  • Childcare
  • Substance abuse counseling
  • Employment counseling
  • Public relations

You will also be prepared to pursue a graduate degree in psychology. SHU offers a Master’s in Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students must have completed the equivalent of a United States secondary-school education (approximately twelve years of formal education) and have the appropriate diploma or satisfactory results on leaving examinations.

For all non-native English speakers, an official English language proficiency examination is required. The following examinations and minimum scores are accepted:

  • TOEFL 80+
  • TOEFL iBT Home Edition: 80
  • TOEFL Essentials: 8.5
  • Academic IELTS 6.5
  • Duolingo 110
