What will I learn?

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry provides a thorough education for students planning careers as research scientists, industrial chemists, and in areas such as crime labs, environmental sustainability and government. The Chemistry Major also prepares students for careers in medicine, genetic engineering, toxicology, pharmaceutics, chemical education, nanoscience, and more. A foundational science, chemistry prepares students for a wide range of careers such as research scientist, industrial chemist, educator and health care provider. Trained chemists are found in research and development, forensics, manufacturing, engineering, conservation, medicine and more. Research experience is critical at the undergraduate level and readily available at UWM in areas such as drug discovery, nanomaterials, synthesis and more. UWM students have multiple options to tailor their degree to their career objectives, including a general chemistry major, a chemistry major with a biochemical focus, a minor, a master’s with thesis, a master’s without thesis and a doctoral degree.
