What will I learn?

The widely-respected Master of Science (M.S.) program in Chemistry at St. John’s will prepare you for a career in industry, education, government laboratories, or private research, or to pursue a doctoral degree in the field. It features a broad and cross-disciplinary curriculum that includes such areas as organic and inorganic chemistry, computer applications in chemistry, natural products, methods of analysis, and reaction kinetics. You work closely with distinguished faculty members as part of the supportive scholarly community that exists within the Department of Chemistry. You may also have the opportunity to supervise undergraduate laboratory activities as a graduate assistant, receiving tuition remission and a stipend in return.

Entry requirements

For international students

If you wish to pursue graduate study in chemistry, your best preparation is a bachelor of science degree in a chemical science.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not attended a postsecondary institution in which English is the language of instruction must provide TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores for admission.

Applicants who have taken the SAT can have the TOEFL/IELTS requirement waived

Applicants who have attended an American high school abroad or an American university can have the TOEFL/IELTS requirement waived

Applicants from the following countries do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score: American Samoa; Antigua and Barbuda; Australia; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Bermuda; Botswana; British Virgin Islands; Canada (except Quebec); Dominica; Eswatini; Gambia; Ghana; Grenada; Grand Cayman; Guyana; Ireland; Jamaica; Kenya; Lesotho; Liberia; Malawi; Mauritius; New Zealand; Nigeria; Papua New Guinea; Sierra Leone; Singapore; South Africa; St. Kitts and Nevis (St. Christopher); St. Lucia; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; Turks and Caicos Isle; Uganda; United Kingdom; U.S. Pacific Trust; Zambia; and Zimbabwe. This list is subject to change.

Applications received by March 1 will receive priority consideration for fall admission. Applications received by October 1 will be given priority consideration for spring admission.
