Cooperative PhD - Engineering Science in Civil, Environmental and Geotechnical Engineering Concentrations

The SIUE School of Engineering participates in the Doctor of Philosophy in engineering science offered by the College of Engineering at SIUC. Students enrolled in this cooperative PhD program should reference the Student Guide for detailed information on program processes.The collaborative PhD program is supported by research activities and projects of the SIUE School of Engineering faculty. The School is housed in the 190,000-square-foot Engineering Building that also includes state-of-the-art laboratories for research and instruction.The School of Engineering also administers the Environmental Resources Training Center (ERTC), and ENGTEC, a cross-disciplinary business, manufacturing and technology incubator, fabrication and proof-of-concept facility. Additionally, the National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) is housed on the SIUE campus. With its resources and facilities, the SIUE School of Engineering is strategically well-positioned to provide the best educational experience for our students.

In order for a student to hold an assistantship at SIUE, the student must maintain a GPA of 3.0 and enroll in at least six credit hours per academic term. The student may be enrolled at SIUE only, or be enrolled at both SIUE and SIUC as long as the cumulative enrolled hours equals at least six. Co-op PhD students will receive a tuition waiver and stipend.Courses are offered in environmental, structural, transportation, and geotechnical engineering. Environmental engineering topics include water and wastewater treatment as well as solid and hazardous waste management. Structural engineering topics include structural analysis and concrete, masonry, steel, and timber design. Transportation engineering topics include site selection, safety, and system design. Geotechnical topics include soil mechanics, foundation, excavation, tunneling, retaining structures, and supporting systems.
