What will I learn?

The design studies program prepares students for impactful roles in design research and innovation. Explore design as research and discourse. Study design as a research-driven, interdisciplinary field, engaging with current trends and future directions in a global context. Develop critical and ethical insight. Build expertise in design research, data analysis and critical thinking while addressing ethical considerations and the social, cultural and environmental impacts of design. Integrate interdisciplinary knowledge. Broaden your understanding by synthesizing insights from other academic disciplines, enriching your approach to complex design challenges. Communicate across diverse audiences. Cultivate skills to effectively communicate design concepts and research findings through written, visual and oral formats for varied audiences.

Entry requirements

For international students

You must be enrolled in or have graduated from an accredited secondary school. SAT/ACT scores will not be required for students applying for Spring 2026, Fall 2026, or Spring 2027 admission. Students who choose not to submit test scores will not be disadvantaged and will remain eligible for merit scholarships. A portfolio is not required if you are applying to the B.S. in Design Studies or B.S. in Studio Arts. Once you submit your application you will be able to submit your portfolio via your applicant portal. You will find a link to submit your portfolio in your application checklist.
