What will I learn?

UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business is looking for top doctoral students with an intellectual curiosity about the nature and manner in which business organizations work. Graduates are competent in conducting independent research and teaching. The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is primarily designed as a full-time program although we may occasionally admit students on a part-time basis. The expectation is that full-time students will finish the program within four or five years depending on the entry semester, while part-time students will complete the program in no more than seven years.With seven concentrations/options to choose from, our Ph.D. program has a mission in training graduates who are well-prepared to advance knowledge, educating the next generation of business professionals and contributing to their scholarly communities. The Manning School prides itself in having a high-caliber faculty who publish cutting-edge, industry-relevant research in top academic journals.The objective of the Marketing Concentration is to train students in the theories and methods necessary to conduct substantive research in areas including marketing strategy, consumer behavior, new product and service development, social media, digital marketing, and retailing. Strong emphasis is given to providing the students with the skills to contribute to extant knowledge in the marketing discipline as well as the flexibility to customize the program based on their interests and career goals.

Entry requirements

For international students

  • Statement of Purpose: Outline goals, experience and achievements (max 2 pages)
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two (2) for master's, three (3) for doctoral applicants.
  • Transcripts: You may apply with unofficial transcripts, but if accepted, official transcripts are required.
  • Test Scores: UMass Lowells school code is 3911. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required for Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) applicants. It is accepted, but not required, for master's applicants.

International Applicants

Transcripts must show degree completion and include a credential evaluation from a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member, such as:

To qualify for admission into the Ph.D. program, applicants are expected to be graduates of an accredited U.S. college or university or an approved foreign equivalent institution and have earned grade point averages of 3.000 or better in all prior undergraduate and graduate studies.

All applicants must also submit a full Graduate Application, including an official GMAT or GRE score taken within the last five years, official undergraduate and graduate academic transcripts from all previously attended institutions, application form, statement of purpose, application fee, resume, and three letters of recommendation.

If an international transcript does not adequately demonstrate that an applicant has the equivalent of an American bachelor's or master's degree, the applicant must obtain such verification by an independent service such as the Center for Educational Documentation, Boston, MA (617-338-7171). In addition, international students are expected to at least meet the minimum UMass Lowell TOEFL requirements and must submit an official score report.

  • The faculty admissions committee will review all of the above admissions materials in a portfolio approach.
