What will I learn?

The neuroscience Ph.D. program provides an immersive, multidisciplinary graduate curriculum leading to the Ph.D. in Neuroscience degree. The mission is to prepare students to become scientists and educators with the abilities to excel in a neuroscience and related discipline career. Program goal The program goal is to provide students with training in neuroscience and the scientific skills needed to advance a career across a broad spectrum of research-oriented positions. The program provides a framework for the progressive development and demonstration of mastery over neuroscience and related discipline subject matter, the ability to synthesize information and apply foundational knowledge to investigation and education in this discipline. The framework prepares students to develop new areas of scientific exploration, design and implement experimentation, analyze and interpret experimental results, and communicate (written and verbally) new knowledge to a variety of audiences. Having completed their training, students should be prepared to obtain employment in a neuroscience-related position.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applications for the program must be submitted to the Biomedical Sciences Doctoral Portal – School of Medicine – Ph.D. selected from the drop-down menu of programs on the VCU online application form. A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent in the biological sciences (or other area related to neuroscience) at the time of enrollment with an undergraduate GPA of 3.5. Personal statement covering the following: long-term career goals to assess reasons behind the candidates application; how a Ph.D. in biomedical science helps achieve those goals; the factors motivating a career in research; past research experience, including dates, places and durationThree letters of recommendation that address the scientific competency and experience of the applicant with particular focus on research experienceThe equivalent of two semesters of general biology, two semesters of general chemistry, organic chemistry and/or biochemistry, and additional semesters of upper-level biology courses (e.g. cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, physiology, biophysics, etc.
