What will I learn?

UMass Lowell’s Ph.D. in Psychology degree program provides an immersive and hands-on research experience. Our program is designed to equip students with both a strong foundation in psychological science and the tools to apply psychological theories to real-world challenges. As a doctoral student, you’ll receive specialized training in high-demand areas sought by employers, such as advanced quantitative and qualitative methods, behavior analysis, epigenetics, psychophysiology, narrative methods, grant and policy writing and meta-analytic approaches. You’ll also have the chance to work alongside renowned faculty who are not only experts in their fields, but also passionate about mentoring the next generation of scholars.

Entry requirements

For international students

  • A statement of purpose up to three double-spaced pages describing your plans for graduate study, research experience, current and future research interests, and career goals. Indicate which of the four tracks you are most interested in and why, whether you intend to enroll full-time or part-time, and at least one faculty member with whom you would be interested in doing research
  • Three letters of recommendation provided by sources familiar with applicant from an academic context
  • A curriculum vitae highlighting academic and professional achievements.
  • Official transcripts
  • Official test scores
    • GRE not required
  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology or related field with a minimum 3.250 GPA from an accredited institution
  • Alternatively a Master's degree in Psychology or related field with a minimum 3.750 GPA from an accredited institution
  • Applicants should have a strong academic background in psychology or a related field
  • Applicants are required to have obtained a level of proficiency in psychological research, as demonstrated by the completion of a senior honor's thesis, master's thesis or two graduate-level research methodology courses in psychology or related field with a "B" or better
  • An interview may be requested by the Graduate Admissions Committee
