Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health

The 15 credit hours graduate Certificate in Occupational Health provides education and training focused on scientific, technical, regulatory, and administrative principles and practices for preventing and controlling worker and community exposures to physical (e.g., noise, radiation), chemical (e.g., toxic), and biological (e.g., infectious, allergenic, intoxicating) agents and ergonomic factors that can cause human illness. The profession focuses on prevention of exposure or occurrence and mitigation of factors and agents that contribute to illness and jury to workers and other members of the community. Occupational health professionals also have the education and training applicable to preparedness for, and response to natural disaster and intentional terrorist events. NOCPH MPH students may take this certificate concurrently while earning their MPH, except for ENVH majors. Student Learning Objectives Student learning objectives for the Certificate in Occupational Health: Identify agents, factors, and stressors generated by and/or associated with defined sources, unit operations, and/or processes Describe qualitative and quantitative aspects of generation of agents, factors, and stressors Describe physiological and/or toxicological interactions of physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic agents, factors, and/or stressors with the human body Recommend and evaluate engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls and/or other interventions to reduce and eliminate hazards Demonstrate an understanding of applicable business and managerial practices Interpret and apply applicable occupational and environmental regulations
