What will I learn?

Plant pathologists keep plants healthy. Gain skills to understand organisms and agents that cause disease. Discover how plants grow and how disease affects them. The program focuses on plant disease biology, plant sciences, biology, mycology, microbiology, virology, nematology, ecology, disease management, plant resistance to plant pathogens, molecular biology, plant microbe interactions and entomology.Use modern scientific equipment and techniques to find out how pathogens attack plants and understand the effects of environmental conditions on disease development. Much of your learning will take place at plant science farms across the state, climate-controlled greenhouses and laboratories where you will conduct independent research alongside leading faculty field experts.

Entry requirements

For international students

Graduate school applicants must possess the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree, with a minimum overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

To prepare for courses required to earn a degree in plant science, we recommend you: have an undergraduate degree in agriculture, biology, botany, horticulture, agricultural engineering, environmental science, natural resources or other related area

The following are acceptable as proof of English competency for graduate students:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum overall score of 79

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): minimum overall score of 6.5

MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): Minimum overall score of 77

U of I American Language and Culture Program (ALCP) with score of a Level 6/Advanced Pass
