What will I learn?

The mission of the graduate program in art history is to equip students with requisite knowledge, skills and theoretical foundation to embark on successful careers in academia and/or museums. The M.A. curriculum concentrations provide students with a general background in the research methods and teachings of art history in preparation for careers in museums, collections care or arts organizations. It also prepares students for the more rigorous research demands of the Ph.D., which is the required degree for academic and curatorial careers.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants should have a B.A. in Art History or a B.A. or B.S. in a related field (such as history, anthropology, literary or cultural studies, philosophy) or a B.F.A. with course work in art history. An art history degree is not required, but applicants should have a foundation of course work in art history beyond (but including) the introductory survey.In addition to the general admission requirements of the VCU Graduate School, applicants to the Master of Arts in Art History must meet the following requirements:A statement of purpose 750-1000 words in length that briefly describes the applicants academic background, the aspects of art history they wish to study at VCU, their professional goals and aspirations, and how the program in historical studies will help them pursue their interests and achieve their goalsA writing sample that has a clearly articulated thesis supported by coherent discussion of appropriate scholarly and/or primary sources. Usually a research paper in art history or a related field, the writing sample should demonstrate research and writing skills as well as the ability to analyze works of art and visual culture both visually and historicallyThree letters of recommendation, at least two of which are from undergraduate instructors who can assess the applicants preparation and promise for graduate work; a third letter may be from a museum or other arts professional who has supervised their work as an intern or employee Official transcripts from schools where the applicant completed course work applied toward the baccalaureate degreeA current resume or CV Special requirementsWriting sample
