Master of Arts in Art History

The two-year M.A. program in art history at OSU differs from most traditional art history programs through its prioritization of intercultural connections, globalism and transnationalism. With six tenured or tenure-track faculty members, this program offers significant historical and geographical breath, including Europe, the United States, Native America, East Asia, Latin America and Islamic World from the Middle Ages to today. In addition to an M.A. degree in Art History, our students are able to obtain a certificate in Museum and Curatorial Studies.

Thesis option - 30 credit hours total
Non-thesis option - 36 credit hours total

OSU's art history faculty are actively conducting research and publishing at the forefront of their fields. The eight full-time faculty members received doctoral degrees from the country's top art history programs, including Stanford, Northwestern, the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Rutgers.



Faculty research encompasses a broad historical and geographic range, from medieval Europe to modern China. We approach these diverse historical periods from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including feminism and queer theory, visual cultures of colonialism and transnationalism, histories of race and ethnicity, and material culture and phenomenology.
