What will I learn?

The Master of Arts in History serves both as preparation for doctoral study and as a professional degree in many fields of research, teaching, and public history.The Department of History offers degrees for the Masters of Arts and the Doctor of Philosophy. The program is known for special strengths in public history, Medieval Europe, and the history of the Americas. The Department also offers two Graduate Certificates and an Accelerated Graduate Degree Program (BA/MA).History graduates in the Department of History at Western Michigan University teach history at research universities, small liberal arts colleges, community colleges, private schools and K-12. They curate archives, craft museum exhibits, create documentary films and serve in government posts like the National Park Service. They are employed by private industry in a host of positions that call upon their advanced history training. Above all, WMU history graduate students go on to produce new scholarly research about the past that they share with others.

Entry requirements

For international students

Substantial undergraduate course work in history and closely related disciplines is typically required for admission to the Master of Arts program.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general aptitude test scores.

Students whose native language is other than English must achieve a TOEFL score of 600 or above,

Minimum English proficiency test scores:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 80 iBT

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: 6.5

Pearson Test of English, Academic Module (PTE): 54

Michigan English Test (MET): 57

Application deadlines:

Fall: April 1; Spring: August 1
