Master of Arts in Linguistics - General Linguistics

The department offers an undergraduate major in Linguistics, including options in Translation Studies and TESOL, a minor in Linguistics, a major and minor in ASLD, an option in ASL - English Interpreting, an undergraduate minor in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), a Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and the MA with four options: TESOL, General, Language and Culture and Special Option. This program is designed both for students who wish to pursue further graduate study and those seeking a terminal degree. The program seeks to blend theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics and draws from a variety of disciplines. The M.A. offers three options and one concentration- General Linguistics Option. Language and Culture Option. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Special Concentration.Goals for students receiving the MA degree: Students will demonstrate analytic knowledge of a variety of grammatical structures, and the ability to relate language structures to theoretical perspectives on grammar.Students will demonstrate understanding of the social, cultural and political dimensions of language use in everyday and institutional contexts.Students will demonstrate abilities in developing a range of ESL/EFL classroom learning activities that maximize student learning.Students will demonstrate substantial knowledge of language variation, including historical change and dialect varietyStudents will demonstrate understanding of how people acquire first and second languages and the implications of the nature of language acquisition for language instruction and education policy.Students will demonstrate understanding of research methodologies in linguistics by designing and carrying out original independent research on a linguistic topic.
