Through a combination of coursework and research, students delve deep into linguistic theory and practice, preparing them for further study at the Ph.D. level or for careers in various sectors including technology, publications, government/international appointments, marketing, and translation. Our master’s of arts in TESOL program also caters to students aspiring to careers in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, blending theoretical knowledge with practical teaching experience. Alongside core linguistics courses, students engage in coursework focusing on language teaching methods, assessment, and second language acquisition. Graduates are equipped to pursue advanced study in language learning and teaching or to embark on careers in language instruction, teacher training, program administration, and related fields. For those who hold a teaching license, coursework in the TESOL program can lead to an ESL endorsement on that license. At the same time, the Linguistics Program offers a range of non-specialist courses for students interested in language study, serving as electives across various degree programs. Opportunities for double majors combining Linguistics or TESOL with other master's programs are also available, providing students with a tailored academic experience. For those interested in both teaching English and the theory behind language, a double major in Linguistics and TESOL may be your goal.
