What will I learn?

The MA program in philosophy provides graduate students with training in a variety of subfields, including philosophy, politics and economics (PPE), applied ontology, metaphysics, philosophy of science, history of early modern philosophy and bioethics. Within the departments two areas of notable strength-PPE and applied ontology-students will acquire skills in cross-disciplinary research that apply philosophical ideas and methods in the real world. PPE uses a combination of political philosophy, formal and experimental methods, and social science to gain new insights into complex social and political problems. Applied ontology helps to solve problems in information and data science. Graduate students within the department benefit from individual faculty mentorship, extensive opportunities for community engagement and professional development, and an active scholarly community.

Entry requirements

For international students

To be eligible for graduate study at UB, we expect:

A bachelor's degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited/government recognized college or university. Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all.
A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions.
Appropriate standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, etc.). Not all programs require test scores.
Letters of recommendation.
