What will I learn?

Governors State’s Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio Art is a dynamic multidisciplinary terminal studio arts degree designed to further the individual development of artists and to provide them with professional competency in the studio arts. Areas of concentration at GovState include: Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture.At GovState, areas of study are taught by faculty who are practicing art professionals with a national exhibition record. Together our exceptional Studio and Art History faculty help make GovState one of the most comprehensive, flexible, and affordable studio art programs in the Chicagoland region.

Entry requirements

For international students

All applicants must:

  • have earned (or will have earned by the term they wish to enroll) a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university,
  • have been in good standing at the last institution attended,
  • have satisfied collegial and/or major criteria, if applicable, for graduate study in a specific major

International Students must meet the university language requirement for admission to the university. Applicants must take either Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Pearson Test of English (PTE).

  • For the IELTS, applicants must meet the minimum acceptable score of 6.0 academic version.
  • TOEFL Exam scores: Paper - 550; Listening - 55; Reading - 54; Writing - 58; Computer Internet - 213; Listening - 21; Reading - 24; Writing - 21; Internet (iBT) - 80: Listening - 20; Speaking - 20; Reading - 20; Writing - 20.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Exam score 53: Listening - 53; Speaking - 53; Reading - 53; Writing - 53.

Application Deadlines

Priority Deadline April 1 For Fall admission, October 1 for Spring admission (applications are reviewed as needed outside of the priority deadline).
