Teaching Certification Option: If you're aiming to become a licensed music educator in public schools, this pathway combines comprehensive coursework in music and general education with hands-on teaching practicums. Upon completion, you'll be eligible to apply for Initial Licensure through the Massachusetts Department of Education, positioning you as a fully certified music teacher in the state. (Note that the Commonwealth has teacher licensure reciprocity with most states.)

Entry requirements

For international students

  • A statement of purpose
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A resume
  • Official transcripts
  • Official test scores
    • GRE not required
  • Bachelor's degree in music from an accredited institution
  • Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree or its equivalent with a major in music.
  • Those holding degrees in other disciplines will be expected to take prerequisite undergraduate courses for no graduate credit.
  • Prerequisites may be waived at the discretion of the Department of Music through placement examinations or professional experiences.
  • Applicants must have passed the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) test in Music within the last five years.
  • On-site audition or audition tape is required
