What will I learn?
The Biology department is committed to graduate training of the highest quality. Its programs are sufficiently flexible to permit training in diverse research areas and to allow for the pursuit of interdisciplinary research programs.Our graduate programs-leading to either the M.S. or Ph.D. degree-are offered in a wide variety of sub-disciplines within the following primary research areas: cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, developmental biology, ecology and plant biology, evolution, animal behavior, genetics, genomics, epigenetics, and neuroscience.The Biology department graduate program currently averages about 50 students. About 75 percent of the students enroll directly following their undergraduate work others come with a master's degree earned elsewhere. Virtually all departmental graduate students are supported by full tuition scholarships, as well as teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or fellowships.

For international students
Successful applicants generally have a minimum undergraduate average (GPA) of B (3.0). High scores on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing tests of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) may strengthen an application, although GRE scores are not required.
Applicants must also have earned a B.S. or a B.A. degree, and should have at least a minimal background in both physical and biological sciences, including the following: two years of biology, one year each of introductory chemistry, organic chemistry with laboratory, physics, and college-level calculus. Although not required, a year of biochemistry is desirable for students interested in cell and molecular biology, and training in statistical analysis is desirable for all students.
