What will I learn?

For the civil engineering degrees, students may emphasize one or more of 10 discipline areas available for graduate study within the Department: civil engineering materials, civil infrastructure engineering, construction engineering and management, environmental engineering, geospatial engineering, geotechnical engineering, sustainable land development engineering, water resources engineering, structural engineering, and transportation engineering.

As part of a land-grant University, the department strives to provide a mix of applied and theoretical learning and research opportunities. Success at achieving these goals and in offering attractive graduate study opportunities can be measured by the fact that graduate programs have grown substantially over the past 15 years, while student qualifications have also improved.

The department has 56 full-time and twenty emeritus faculty members many of whom actively engaged with the department. Three faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering, one is a member of the National Academy of Science, two are members of the National Academy of Construction, and ten hold prestigious named professorships. Fifteen members of the faculty have been awarded Presidential Young Investigator, National Young Investigator, or CAREER awards from the National Science Foundation. Two have been awarded the prestigious PECASE Award and seven have been awarded the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award. Faculty members within the department have received numerous national and regional awards for their teaching, research, scholarship and outreach activities.
