What will I learn?

Power systems engineering is a subarea in electrical engineering to study generation, distribution and control of electric power. The electric grid is currently going through a drastic transformation into what is known as Smart Grid. In short, the digital technology that allows for two-way communications between the electric utility and its customers, and the sensing along the transmission lines is what makes the grid smart. A smart grid is more efficient, more resilient to disruptions, and more suitable to support integration of renewable generation resources, such as wind and solar, and other energy resources such as large battery energy storage systems. As part of your Electrical Engineering MS program at UC Riverside, you may acquire specialized training in Smart Grids and Power Systems. The courses that students in the Electrical Engineering MS program in this specialization can take include: Introduction to Smart Grids, Power System Steady State and Market Analysis, Electric Power Distribution Systems, Power System Dynamics

Entry requirements

For international students

A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from an accredited institution or its equivalent in any areas of engineering or in the related areas of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Material Sciences and Computer Sciences. The degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent both in the distribution of academic subject matter and scholarship achievement comparable to that offered at the University of California. Interested students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the subjects closely related to their intended specialization that are normally taught in an undergraduate engineering program such as: Mathematics (Calculus, differential equations and complex variables), Circuits and electronics, Signals and systems, Communication and signal processing, logic design, digital systems and microsystems, Control systems; and at least one major high-level programming language and associated programming techniques area.
