What will I learn?

The department offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of master of science in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics, and the doctor of philosophy in mathematics or applied mathematics. The Department does not offer a doctorate in statistics. However, students may choose statistics or mathematical statistics as a concentration in the doctor of philosophy programs in mathematics and applied mathematics. The Department is a part of the interdisciplinary program in Financial Engineering. For details on the Master of Science in Financial Engineering, see the Interdisciplinary Graduate Study and Research, Financial Engineering section. To begin graduate work in mathematics a student must present evidence of adequate undergraduate preparation. The undergraduate program should have included a year of advanced calculus, a semester of linear algebra, and a semester of abstract algebra. The M.S. in Mathematics degree and the M.S. in Applied Mathematics degree each require 30 credit hours of graduate courses with at least 18 hours of 400-level courses. The choice of the courses must be approved by the graduate advisor. Up to 6 hours of coursework may be replaced with a masters thesis. All students in the program must also pass a comprehensive examination on Calculus, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra. The M.S. degree can serve as a final degree in mathematics or as background for further work toward a Ph.D.
