Students in this program use the latest research techniques in several disciplines to seek new ways of using light in a variety of applications. The program offers opportunities to perform basic and applied research at the frontier of optical communications and networking and a solid foundation in physics, electrical engineering, and materials science and engineering.A multidisciplinary M.S. in photonics imparts students with the knowledge and mastery required to design and test optical components and subsystems and to build and operate optical communications networks. It covers all the essential aspects of the field in sufficient detail to allow graduates to practice the photonics arts professionally, including nonlinear optics, optical materials, optical devices and components, and optical communications systems. A multidisciplinary M.S. in photonics imparts students with the knowledge and mastery required to design and test optical components and subsystems and to build and operate optical communications networks. It covers all the essential aspects of the field in sufficient detail to allow graduates to practice the photonics arts professionally. These aspects include nonlinear optics, optical materials, optical devices and components, and optical communications systems.Those interested in continuing their research in photonics can do so by pursuing the Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, or materials science and engineering. In keeping with the program's strong multidisciplinary character, photonics students are supervised by professors from at least two different disciplines.
