What will I learn?

The Master of Science in Nutritional Science program offers interdisciplinary study in the field of nutrition that allows students to develop particular competencies related to their career aspirations.

The mission of the Master of Science in Nutritional Science Program is to provide a specialized course of advanced nutrition study that integrates graduate education and research to develop competent professionals prepared to meet the nutrition-related needs of the state of California, the nation, and the world.

The program offers four emphases: Nutritional Science, Latino Health and Nutrition, Food Science, and Dietetic Internship, and has a variety of elective courses to meet student needs (with courses in nutrition for exercise and performance, endocrinology, molecular genetics, nutrition and aging, using media to promote nutrition, etc.).

The research experience is a key part of learning and development for students in the program. MS in Nutritional Science students develop skills in planning, carrying out, and evaluating research activities and learn to critically use research findings to inform practice decision. Our nutrition faculty have active research agendas and provide many opportunities for student collaborations on research projects.

Emphases

The MS Program in Nutritional Science offers four emphases:

Nutritional Science
Latino Health and Nutrition
Food Science
Internship Program in Nutrition and Dietetics.

These emphases provide an opportunity for students to:

Specialize in nutritional therapy/community nutrition (Nutritional Science emphasis), Latino Health and Nutrition, or food science or complete the Internship Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (IPND).
Increase competence in food and nutrition subject matter in preparation for college teaching, research, graduate study beyond a master's degree and administrative positions in public and private agencies.

The requirements for prospective graduate students for the Master of Science degree in Nutritional Science are:
A bachelor's degree in Nutrition or Dietetics with an undergraduate overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 undergraduate units attempted.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): Paper-based 550; Internet-based (iBT) 80

IELTS 6.0 each sub-section

Pearson Test of English 58
