What will I learn?

Our graduate program features advanced coursework coupled with cutting-edge research. The Ph.D. requires a detailed dissertation and publication of original works.

Research emphasis areas at the graduate level include the following:

  • Aqueous and environmental geochemistry and water resources
  • Economic geology and petrology
  • Geophysics, tectonics and geodynamics
  • Sedimentology, stratigraphy limnology, and paleoclimatology
  • Paylonology and micropaleontology
  • Petroleum systems

All Geology and Geophysics Ph.D. students are required to take the Professional Geosciences Skills course (GEOLOGY 6100) and either Advanced Physical Geology (GEOLOGY 5111) or Global Tectonics (GEOPHYS 5096). A qualifying examination is required of all Ph.D. students during the third semester of residency.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

GPA of 3.5 is required.

For international students

3.5 GPA in a related undergraduate degree for direct admission to doctoral programs. 3.5 GPA in master’s-level studies for admission to doctoral programs. GRE SCORES: Quantitative Score of 158; Verbal + Quantitative Score of 305; Analytical Writing Score of 3.5. The following minimum scores are required for unconditional admission to Missouri S&T: TOEFL score of 79, IELTS score of 6.5, PTE score of 53.

Priority Application Deadlines: Fall Semester - Feb 15; Spring Semester - Sep. 15; Summer Semester - Nov 15.
