A number of graduate bursaries for research degrees in the areas of Scottish Literature/Scottish Studies (MPhil, PhD) are available to be applied for towards the next academic year (2026-27).

New or continuing postgraduate students at the University of Glasgow are eligible to apply for these awards (new students should already have applied to their chosen programme and been accepted).

Joanna Baillie Bursary (up to £5,000)

Edwin Morgan Bursary (up to £5,000)

Andrew Tannahill Fund Bursaries (£1,000-£3,000)

Colonel Walter Scott Small Bursary (value TBD)

Shaw Scholarships (up to £5,000) [specifically for MPhil research on any aspect of Robert Burns Studies at the Centre for Robert Burns Studies.

    Please apply with a 300-500 word description of your topic, a CV, and confirmation of support from your supervisor/prospective supervisor. Applications will be measured against established criteria for postgraduate research projects, reflecting those of the national research council:

    • qualifications/experience;
    • proposal/project;
    • feasibility/preparedness;
    • institutional fit (supervision and training).
