Overall experience

Great teaching staff, admin needs work

The lecturers and teachers are very helpful and appear to be passionate about what they are doing, the location is fairly convenient. However, compared to many other universities in Melbourne, the administration has a long way to go if it wants to compete. Students Services are for the most part, quite friendly but their access to information seems to be limited. The details of the books required are not provided until the week before and I was only able to see them that early because of the Co-op bookshop website. The Victoria Abroad department has proven to be difficult to communicate with, I have been provided with inaccurate information or they have been just unresponsive. And with Easter coming up, most students were told the week of the Good Friday public holiday that they would have to attend alternative classes the same week. Providing them with only a few days notice to make alternative work, study or childcare arrangements. I'm unsure if they are just disorganised and need to tidy up their processes or if they just have little regard for the time constraints and pressure that is already placed on students. I get the impression that too much is put onto the course coordinators and that they potentially down in admin tasks that should be managed by other departments. This is just an assumption but something is up.

Not too shabby VU, not too shabby

Studying Communications at VU is very fulfilling, knowledgeable teachers and study that can be applied in future jobs are at  high standard. The social side of university is a bit of a let down with limited clubs, interest groups and parties to mix with other students is not as good as universities in other countries.

I recently moved to Melbourne from Adelaide because I find Melbourne very lively and I felt that Melbourne suited my lifestyle better than Adelaide. This place also has a lot of opportunities to offer. I love meeting new people and making friends. I am looking for a job. Hopefully I will get one which will help me to build my skills. I hope to spend quality time here in Melbourne.

whats good about this course

Looking after my expenses myself has made my life a bit tough and it is not cool at all. Getting a work is difficult but besides that the general quality of life here is very good. The studies are not very tough and hope Melbourne will shape my future and career. This is the only university in Australia offering my course and I am enjoying it

Art School

I find the course fantastic, the teachers are all qualified and practicing professional artists who fully encourage all students.  The course unlike most teaches you traditional techniques in oil painting, drawing and printmaking (we do also study photography and digital media) whilst encouraging you to develope your own style which is unusual in art colleges, most try to train you to a style that is instantly reflective of their institution or own style.

Victoria at Flinders

Melbourne is also a tourist destination and we are getting an opportunity to study in such a wonderful place. Make full use of you time here, don’t waste your time. Once you arrive and get settled here, you will know more about the lifestyle here. From my own personal experience, I was going abroad for the first time, I was filled with lots of excitement, eagerness, adventure. However, this led me to overlook small things. I forgot my documents, my certificates, COE. It had to be sent to me in my uni address as I did not have a fixed accommodation then. So don’t make mistakes like me.

Melbourne is also a tourist destination and we are getting an opportunity to study in such a wonderful place. Make full use of you time here, don’t waste your time. Understanding Psychology

It’s a good course in psychology but it wasn’t my first option. I would have preferred Latrobe- they have a reputation for the best psychology course in Victoria, or even Deakin who are good as well, but my ENTER score was low. I had a bad year, emotionally, in year 12 and I guess my ENTER reflected that. But in anycase, I thought I’d start my studies at Vic Uni in psychology, get really good marks and hopefully be able to transfer. This course has a Psychology major but it’s not a pure Psychology degree, as there are options for arts electives. I am enjoying this course, as I do love psychology, but I suppose I have very high standards for my career. I consider this course more a gateway, a stepping stone, to even better options hopefully down the track. Overall, it’s alright but I’d rather just focus all on psychology rather than do other electives as well.
