I have always been highly creative and Whitecliffe opened a window to all the creative fields for me to pick and choose from

I majored in Graphic Design, focusing on motion graphics in Year Four. Most motion graphic artists lack graphic design skills and vice versa. So being able to do both confidently really helps to set me apart. Undertaking a fine arts degree not only taught me the importance of working hard and taking on challenges, it also gave me a different focus. It made me feel like I was on the path to fulfil my potential.

Whitecliffe gave me the time and guidance to develop my thinking about design

I graduated at the end of 2012. A friend who worked for ABUS recommended that i apply for an internship there, so i emailed my digital portfolio to the creative director and was accepted. Now I’m mainly working on concepts for a parallax landing page for one of their products. But I also do smaller jobs such as making name badges, editing photos, Christmas card designs, and making illustrations for next year’s calendar

I never wanted a traditional graphic design job in a studio or standard agency.

I am Community and Events Coordinator for The BizDojo and studio Co.Space; shared office spaces for creative and technology people and businesses. The job involves running events and workshops and developing branding and direction for each event and workshop to keep them in line with the overall direction we take as a home for creative and business innovation. i got the job after using event space at Biz Dojo during my study at Whitecliffe.

Whitecliffe's programme was perfect for me

I became an intern at multidisciplinary design studio Alt Group while in Year Three at Whitecliffe. In Year Four i worked there part-time, and after graduating two years ago, i joined the team as a full-time designer.

Whitecliffe taught me to be disciplined and cope with the pressure of intense deadlines

My job title is simply ‘designer’ but the work I do is quite multidisciplinary, ranging from design and illustration to motion graphics and 3D modeling. Immediately after graduation, began freelancing wherever i could. I took a month-long contract at Brandspank, a boutique agency that specializes in broadcast design and motion graphics for clients, including Rialto TV, Igloo and Sky TV.

I enjoy the process of problem-solving to achieve something creative and utilitarian

The Whitecliffe lecturers know my work inside out and give lots of constructive guidance. I love having the opportunity to drive my own projects, fitting them to the type of work I want to do after graduation, which is multidisciplinary graphic design with a balance of conceptual thinking and good design.

Whitecliffe gives you more insight into what happens after study

You are taught classes like business studies and also pushed to do an internship within a design firm. This is a huge opportunity and not many other tertiary programmes offer such things. Being at Whitecliffe has made me push myself harder than I ever have before. It’s very motivational.

My class at Whitecliffe has become a second family

I wanted small class sizes, one on one contact with lecturers, a creative stimulating work environment that was clean and modern, friendly students and top success rates. This led me to Whitecliffe, the only place where I wanted to study in New Zealand. I have not once regretted that decision.

Whitecliffe has given her the freedom to find her own voice as a designer

I was part of a Whitecliffe team that paired with Hewlett-Packard for Urbis Design Day, and through that I was voted HP Future Designer of the Year 2013. In the Best Awards 2014 i was awarded a Silver Pin in the Student category for my submission Online/Offline. The Best Awards is a Designers Institute of New Zealand annual showcase of all aspects of design - graphic, spatial, product and interactive - to honour the best in graphic design in New Zealand

I enjoy Whitecliffe’s collaborative aspect

I enjoy Whitecliffe’s collaborative aspect. I think it strongly resembles that of a real working practice.

Whitecliffe’s supportive and tuned-in culture meant i had the opportunity to attend the Design Institute’s Best Awards, and the week-long Semi-Permanent creative platform held in Auckland in 2013.
