About University of East Anglia UEA

The University of East Anglia (UEA) is a campus based, research university situated in the city of Norwich, UK. It is ranked 25^th in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2025, and offers outstanding academic, social and cultural facilities to over 17,500 students from around the world.

UEA provides the perfect balance between academic excellence and student experience. Our campus was built on 320 acres of picturesque parkland, and was purpose-built to offer everything students need in one place. From shops, eateries, bars, a dentist, nursery, doctor surgery and an open 24/7 library, to the internationally acclaimed music venue and Sportspark, everything is right on the doorstep of UEA’s wide range of on-site accommodation. If students would like to look around for themselves, the university offers a virtual open day so they can experience what life would look like as a UEA student, from anywhere at any time.

The City of Norwich

The city of Norwich is famous for its historic cathedrals, 12^th century Norman Castle and well-preserved ancient city walls. Located under 2 hours from London by train, Norwich is one of the best places to live in the UK (The Times 2026). It offers excellent shopping, a great night life and a vibrant music scene. As well as being surrounded by beautiful English countryside, Norwich is just a short drive away from the beautiful Norfolk coast. It has a great reputation for culture too, being the first English UNESCO City of Literature.

Student Life in Norwich

UEA students have access to a range of fun activities, from going to the cinema to watch the latest movies, playing board games at local cafes, and renting a boat for the day, to doing escape rooms, bowling, and winter sports.

Not only this, but the Norwich cost of living is generally cheaper than other university cities, with rent prices being 53.7 percent lower than in London, and restaurant prices being 21.4% lower than London.

Scholarships & funding

As an international research-intensive university, located at the heart of Norwich Research Park, the university is passionate about developing innovative approaches and providing funding opportunities to help students achieve excellence in research and education.

Every year UEA welcomes hundreds of international students. The university recognises that the decision to study in the UK implies a substantial financial investment, and therefore a large number of scholarships are provided.

Undergraduate scholarships are designed to reward high achieving applicants who have been offered a place to study with UEA. There are also country-specific scholarships available, alongside externally funded scholarships such as the Chevening and Marshall Scholarships. These are a variety of the postgraduate scholarships available to international students.

Eligibility

Entry requirements

UEA offers a diverse selection of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, welcoming applications from students of all backgrounds.

Entry requirements vary depending on the level and subject of study, so prospective students are encouraged to review the specific criteria for their chosen course before applying. Some programmes may have additional prerequisites, such as relevant work experience, a portfolio, or prior study in specific subjects.

For non-native English speakers, demonstrating a sufficient level of English language proficiency is essential. Each application is assessed individually, and applicants from all around the world are welcomed. The university provides information about applying to UEA from a particular country on its website.

Department and Faculty

Teaching quality

At UEA, students won’t just learn about what other people have done, thought or said; they will learn by doing things for themselves. This is because the university believes students learn best by experiencing the challenges of the subject first-hand.

Many of UEA’s lecturers and teachers are leading experts in their fields. For example, Dr Michael Wormston is an expert in cataract research, while Dr Eylem Atakav is running the first course in the UK on Women, Islam and Media. While successful academics, UEA staff are equally as dedicated to students and their studies as they are to their own research.

This means UEA course content is informed by the latest thinking and most up-to-date research. It also means that as well as gaining a solid grounding in the study area, students will graduate with in-depth knowledge of the aspects of their subject that are still emerging today.

The university also has a partnership with INTO UEA which offers academic preparation courses and English language programmes designed specifically for international students.

Department structure

UEA provides a superb curriculum of academic rigour in a range of subjects across the Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Medicine and Health Sciences. Students who choose UEA are encouraged to find their voice, join in with debates and come up with original ideas. They learn through a wide range of methods, from hands-on classes and small group seminars to lectures, with courses delivered through the university’s four academic faculties.

Arts and Humanities

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities attributes its continued success down to the close bond between research, teaching and innovation. It is comprised of the School of History and Art History, the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing, the School of Media, Language and Communication Studies, the School of Arts, Media and American Studies, the School of Politics, Philosophy and Area Studies and the Interdisciplinary Institute for the Humanities.

Medicine and Health Sciences

Made up of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the faculty is renowned for training first-rate, workforce-ready professionals. UEA is proud to take a leading role in Norwich’s international scientific community as part of one of Europe’s largest collaborative research sites, Norwich Research Park.

Science

The Faculty of Science offers a wide range of courses across subjects from biological science to pharmacy. The Science faculty is an integral partner in the Norwich Research Park, one of Europe’s largest collaborative research sites with over 3,000 scientists, more than 150 science and technology businesses, and a high concentration of world-class institutes.

Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Sciences comprises seven schools that work at the forefront of academic and professional development. The faculty offers a wide range of courses, including economics, education, geography, international development, business, psychology and social work.

Campus and facilities

Facilities

The UEA campus is designed so that everything students need for living and studying is no more than a few minutes away. The campus supports a strong sense of community that contributes to a friendly, social and cultural scene at the university.

UEA boasts award-winning architecture including the Sainsbury Centre art gallery (as featured in the Avengers movies). In addition to these fantastic facilities and a plethora of societies, students also have access to a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a 24-hour library and the LCR, a vibrant music venue. Students will have everything they need on their doorstep, with live music events, film screenings and other events to help them feel at home. The campus also has a doctor, a dentist, a pharmacy, a nursery, a launderette, a post office, IT facilities, careers centre, shops, cafes, a multi-faith centre, free Wi-Fi and lots of green space to relax in.

UEA isn’t just a great place to study, it’s also a great place to live. Located in natural parkland, the campus is a safe, friendly home to a diverse community of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Undergraduate international students are guaranteed campus accommodation for their first year (subject to a few conditions), which means being surrounded by stunning English countryside, with Norwich, one of the UK’s best cities, right on the doorstep.

International postgraduate students (subject to a few conditions) are also able to stay in the university accommodation during the first year of their course. The university provides information and advice for students, including those with families, wishing to live off campus too.
