Florida International University (FIU) is a public research university with colleges and schools that offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs in fields such as business, engineering, and law to name but a few. FIU serves a diverse community of students with more than ten locations worldwide and a population of more than 3,500 international students from over 140 countries.
With more than 200 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral options – many available online – and South Florida’s only public colleges of law and medicine, FIU offers a program to fit every passion.
The FIU College of Engineering and Computing is South Florida’s leading engineering education resource with more than 109 award-winning and patent-holding faculty researchers. The college offers a complete range of fully accredited degree programs including biomedical and construction management to name a few.

FIU has recently been acknowledged in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, where six FIU colleges had graduate programs placed in the top 50 amongst public universities. The College of Nursing and Health Sciences, School of International and Public Affairs, College of Business, College of Public Health and Social Work, College of Engineering and Computing, and College of Arts, Sciences & Education had their programs ranked within the top 50 in the 2020 best graduate schools.
A highlight of the rankings was the placement of FIU Business at number four for the best international public MBA programs. Furthermore, the College of Law was rated in the top 50 public law schools in the country. These accolades for FIU follow on from last year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings, which saw FIU place in the top 100 universities in the U.S. for the first time.

FIU is consistently ranked in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's “100 Best Values in Public Colleges.” FIU’s students pay less tuition up front and carry less debt after graduation than the national average. FIU is dedicated to keeping higher education accessible to all and annually awards more than USD 180 million in financial aid.
Scholarships help students graduate from FIU with little to no debt. Scholarships are usually merit-based financial aid (awarded based on your grades and achievements) but some may have need-based requirements as well.
Students may qualify for additional scholarships based on academic merit, talent, or cultural background. Many funding opportunities are housed on the Academic Works website. FIU encourages students to create an account and browse the database for additional funding options. Each opportunity will have detailed information on the denomination, structure, and criteria for each. The criteria may vary according to the subject, department, or college and students are encouraged to check in detail prior to lodging an application.

Students apply from all around the world to Florida International University to earn degrees online or on-campus. One of the primary prerequisites for international students coming to FIU is that they have English language proficiency.
The TOEFL or IELTS may be required after initial review of application materials. The TOEFL (or IELTS) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English and are offered worldwide.

Exceptions for the requirements include citizens from English speaking countries, and also applicants who have completed four years of high school, an undergraduate, or postgraduate degree in the United States or other English-speaking countries.
If students are still finishing high school, while living in their home country, they can gain a valuable advantage with Early University Credit Academy that will help them achieve a bachelor’s degree faster once they are admitted to FIU. Early University Credit Academy offers a shortcut to start earning college credits through FIU Online, while still in high school. The credits that students earn from FIU can be applied toward a full FIU degree - either completed through FIU Online or on campus in Miami, FL. All courses are fully online and can be accessed from anywhere in the world at any time to complete coursework. Courses offered through the program fulfill FIU’s core curriculum classes and are taught by the same faculty that teach on-campus.

As a product of its faculty and staff efforts, FIU is among the ten largest public research institutions in the nation and the university maintains top recognitions including being ranked 17th in the nation by Washington Monthly for engagement and contributions to the community and is classified by Carnegie as a Highest Research Activity University.
FIU’s faculty produces research to build communities and solve issues while they provide highly ranked education to students. A variety of ways exist for students to become involved in research, from undergraduate through to doctoral studies. Undergraduate students at FIU are encouraged to contact faculty about current research projects and the availability of opportunities to work with faculty members on their research. Graduate students may also participate in ongoing research at the university and apply for the many internally available fellowships and graduate assistantships. External funding opportunities also exist for graduate students, generally aimed at pre-doctoral/dissertation level students.
FIU has impressive facilities, including a library holding over one million books and a state-of-the-art fitness center complete with a 50-meter swimming pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, squash courts, and soccer fields. There are also over 31 different restaurants across the two campuses, including a Starbucks, Moe's, and Subway.

FIU Housing offers students the real college experience. The university's student housing community is vibrant and bustling with 3,200 students who live, work, and play surrounded by FIU’s lush, expansive campus. On-campus housing is an environment dedicated to meeting all students’ needs. FIU offers an on-campus Residential Life team, which works hard on creating and hosting events for residents year-round.
FIU’s facilities enhance and expand the collaborative capabilities of its research community through the university’s state-of-the-art, shared research facilities and recharge centers. Facilities include the Advanced Mass Spectrometry Facility (AMSF) and the Advanced Material Engineering Research Institute (AMERI) to name just a few.
