Overview

Iowa State University was one of the first land-grant universities to be founded on the principles of equal opportunities, practical teaching and knowledge sharing. Today, it is home to approximately 36,000 students (more than 4,000 international) and offers top-ranked undergraduate and graduate programs. Top-notch, interdisciplinary research is carried out at Iowa State in a broad range of areas and issues of international relevance. As a land-grant institution, teaching, research, and outreach are our primary missions. Iowa State University is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Iowa State also has many other program specific accreditations, including our College of Business which is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), our College of Engineering which is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), and our architecture program which is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).

Learning Communities

Committed to help students achieve academic success, learning communities are small groups of students who generally take two or three courses together and may also live near each other in the same residence hall. More than half of entering first-year students choose to join a learning community. With more than 80 learning communities to join there is definitely something for every interest. U.S.News& World Report recognizes Iowa State's learning communities as one of the top 25 programs in the nation. Visit the Learning Communities website to learn more.

Life at Iowa State

Filled with exceptional academic and recreational facilities, Iowa State offers a vibrant living environment. Students share their experiences with a multicultural international student community and work towards their academic goals in serene surroundings. More than 800 student organizations, valuable academic support, plenty of athletic facilities, affordable and safe housing, and unlimited entertainment options make life at Iowa State a quality university experience.

The city of Ames is a friendly and welcoming place for new students. A small college town of 60,000, it is often characterized as ''clean and green'' due to the hundreds of acres of parks, recreational facilities, and bike paths it offers, and the fact that it has no polluting industries. Ames has been consistently listed in many ranking lists including the ones for the best college towns, the most liveable small cities of the US, and the best places to live in America. The city-wide bus system CyRide offers reliable fare-free transport for students. Ames is 30 minutes away from Des Moines (the capital of Iowa), and 3 hours away from Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Omaha, thus our students often travel together to the ''big cities'' during their campus breaks.

Worship

Ames has dozens of churches or communities of worship, including Protestant and Catholic Christian churches, a synagogue, and an Islamic center. A Hindu temple is located in the nearby town of Madrid.

Restaurants and ethnic markets

Ames has a wide variety of ethnic restaurants and food markets, including Asian, British, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Korean, Mexican, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisine. In addition to the mainstream supermarkets, Ames also has international grocery stores, organic food stores, and Asian food stores.

My Experience at Iowa State Two years ago when I was applying for college, I had no idea what to expect. I am so glad that I chose to come to Ames; one of the best college towns in the nation. I have met a lot people who I’ve become great friends with and will hopefully remain friends with after college. Iowa State offers so many opportunities for its student ranging from academic ones to recreational ones. I’ve always felt like help is provided whenever I needed it whether it is career-related, doing better at school, or even networking and making friends. There is always something to do around here it never gets boring. I am very fortunate to have chosen my college adventures to be at Iowa State! show less

My experience at ISU has been amazing! I have been able to meet people from all over the world, and learn a little bit about each one. Here the oppotunities are endless, right now I am in an internship working for a company, it's been amazing, and I got real engineer experience. Also, thanks to all the clubs, I have traveled to different cities all around US for different conferences. Being able to study, do research, be in involve in campus, and travel is something I would not have been able to do back home. These two years have been full of new stories, and I am looking forward the next two! show less
