Ninth president of Simmons University

In 2020, Simmons University announced it had appointed its next president. Lynn Perry Wooten took up the role in July, becoming the institution’s first African American president.

Wooten was previously a business school dean at the Ivy League institution, Cornell University. Her “clear strategic vision and creativity, seasoned leadership experience, strong academic record and collaborative style make her ideally suited to advance our university during this critical period,” said a statement from the Simmons board of trustees.

Start learning remotely

Both Kaplan and Simmons University are supporting international students during the pandemic. They continue to welcome new students and help them reach their academic goals through digital learning.

The university teaches through a remote learning model. Students who can’t yet travel to the U.S. can begin their studies online, and come to campus when it is safe to do so.

Virtual campus

Simmons University has developed an online campus for its undergraduate students. This has been designed around high-quality educational practices and outcomes.

Remote students are provided with extensive support and resources to facilitate learning and group work. There are hundreds of courses held online, which involve plenty of student-faculty interaction.

Simmons University offers a close, tight-knit community. Classes are small with a student-faculty ratio of 8:1. Simmons professors are leaders in their fields and mentors in the classroom. Students design their own education as the curriculum is interdisciplinary and customizable. The core curriculum prepares women for 21st century career success by helping them practice leadership and put their knowledge and skills into action.

The university partners with many employers, including more than 450 hospitals and clinics. This gives students the chance to apply what they’ve learned in the real world. All undergraduate students complete at least one internship, clinical, research, fieldwork, or similar experience.

Colleges of the Fenway

Those at Simmons also enjoy Colleges of the Fenway membership. The Colleges of the Fenway is a group of five neighboring Boston-based colleges, with a network of 20,000 students and 700 members of faculty.

Simmons students can cross-register for courses at the other colleges at no additional cost. This gives students many more academic choices and opportunities to explore. They also get to experience a larger variety of teaching methods and meet even more people.

Academic criteria for admission

Students need good high school grades equivalent to GPA 3.0. No SAT or ACT is required.

English entry requirements

For a Simmons bachelor’s degree, students need the following minimum English scores:

  • TOEFL 89
  • IELTS 6.5
  • Pearson PTE 60
  • Duolingo DET 105
  • Kaplan International English School – Advanced level.

Conditional admission is offered for students with lower English levels.

Through Kaplan, international students can apply directly for a bachelor’s degree in four academic colleges at Simmons University. Over 50 majors are available. Popular options include:

  • Wentworth Institute of Technology (technical design and engineering).

Dual degree in engineering with Columbia University

This is a five-year program, during which student spend their first three years at Simmons University in Boston and the final two years at Columbia University in New York City. At the end of the program, students graduate with two STEM bachelor’s degrees: a Bachelor of Science from Simmons and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Columbia.

Kaplan provides comprehensive support for students at every step of their university admission journey, from before they have even applied to study at Simmons.

Friendly advisers give students all the knowledge they need to make an informed choice of major, and help them understand what to expect from living and studying in Boston.

Students will also be given comprehensive support throughout the application process, including ensuring they have all the necessary documents, and checking specific requirements of their chosen program.

Once Kaplan sends an application, Simmons University will make an admission decision within seven working days, and then students can secure their place by paying a deposit if they have an unconditional offer.

Students receive continued support as they apply for a visa, book campus housing, and make their plans to travel to the U.S.

Kaplan staff understand that studying abroad is a big step to take, and many have had experience of studying and working abroad. When students apply with Kaplan, they will benefit from expert advice and guidance on their path to a university degree.

Simmons Kaplan Women’s Leadership Scholarship

This award provides a special opportunity for future women leaders from all over the world. It’s a 50 percent undergraduate tuition discount, worth more than USD 80,000+ over four years.

Female students who apply through Kaplan have the opportunity to apply for the scholarship at the same time as a bachelor’s degree at Simmons University. It can be renewed every year for four years.
