St. George’s University (SGU) aims to bring together top talent and practices from all over the globe and has become a center for academic excellence. SGU has a network of over 22,000 School of Medicine graduates around the world, based on students who have completed the Doctor of Medicine program from 1981-2023. SGU establishes itself as an institution that builds rewarding careers and has positively impacted the health and wellness of the global community.
Students have the option to start their medical education in Grenada or the UK. Global study opportunities include SGU’s UK MD Track in partnership with Northumbria University where students can spend up to three years studying in Newcastle.
Upon completing Basic Sciences, students will progress to two years of clinical rotations, which take place in over 75 affiliated hospitals in the US and UK. These trusted connections allow students to gain a breadth of knowledge with different specialties across multiple environments and gain valuable international experience.
Incoming students are admitted to SGU on a rolling basis. The School of Medicine has new intakes in August, January and April.
SGU is located on the Caribbean island of Grenada. Established in 1976, the university offers superb modern facilities, equipment, and learning technologies, alongside a multicultural campus experience. Grenada has a rich blend of African, English, and French influences, and a lively atmosphere with diverse food, music, language, and entertainment options. The official language of Grenada is English.
1 As the medical school graduating the largest number of students per year, SGU places the largest number of graduates into residency programs each year, based on internal SGU graduate/expected graduate and residency placement data as of March 2024.
2 According to US News and World Report, 2023-2024.
3 According to FSMB physician licensure data, 2021.
4 Average of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 residency placement rates. Residency placement rate is defined as the total number of international students/graduates (non-US or Canadian) who obtained a US residency divided by the total number of international students/graduates who applied to a US residency program in a given year as of April 2024.
These figures are based on 2024-2025 academic year rates and are subject to change. Historically rates have increased annually, and students are expected to plan accordingly. All figures are in US dollars.
International students may be eligible for various scholarships, grants and bursaries. This includes the Global Scholars Bursary and the International Peace Bursary.
Global Scholars Bursary – Students may receive partial-tuition awards when joining the Four-Year MD Program with St. George’s University of Grenada School of Medicine/Northumbria University (SGU/NU). International Peace Bursary – Students may receive partial-tuition awards to support their work towards enhancing medical care systems. SGU’s School of Medicine (SOM) has received accreditation for decades, and as a result, the university’s medical graduates have continuously been eligible to practice in the US. The Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC), SGU SOM’s accreditor, is recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) and the U.S. National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA). The WFME’s recognition of GMDC ensures that SGU SOM students have access to USMLE Step exams, US clinical rotations, eligibility for US residency placement, and the physician licensing process in the US and many other countries worldwide.
Students entering with a bachelor’s degree can follow the traditional Four-Year MD program. There are also three preclinical tracks leading to the Four-Year MD program. The preclinical phase includes coursework that prepares students for medical school.
The preclinical phase prepares students for the advanced medical phase later in the MD program. It includes the study of preclinical sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
Basic Sciences are the first two years of the Four-Year MD program. Students can complete the entire two years in Grenada, or partly in the UK at Northumbria University. Teaching is through traditional lectures, laboratory sessions, small–group sessions, and case-based learning exercises. Faculties include:
