Diplomas are an excellent option for those who want to gain more knowledge of a particular subject, specialise in one area or even test whether a particular subject or field is the right one for you. First, we’ll tell you what they are and what institutions offer diploma courses in Canada. We’ll also look at why you should consider a diploma course in this country and explore the top-ranking universities offering such programmes.

Types of diplomas

There are two types of diplomas in Canada: undergraduate diplomas and postgraduate ones. Undergraduate or general diplomas are taken straight after the end of secondary education. These are generally two years (four semesters) long. Postgraduate (Advanced) diplomas are three years in length (six semesters).

You will often hear the terms ‘post-secondary diploma’ and ‘postgraduate diploma’ when referring to diplomas in Canada. International students tend to opt for three-year courses as they include an element of paid work.

Diplomas can be taken at public, community, and vocational colleges across the country as well as at certain universities. Diplomas are more work-focused and teach more practical elements to make students ready for employment.

Why Canada?

Added to this is the fact that 10 per cent of its universities rank in the top 200. In addition, qualifications are recognised globally, and courses are more affordable than in other top study destinations. Canada does have a lot of attractive qualities as a study destination.
