The University of Newcastle College of International Education

The University of Newcastle College of International Education (CIE) is the official on-campus pathway college to the University of Newcastle, Australia. The College offers alternative pathway opportunities to over 130 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs at the University, all in a diverse and supportive environment designed to ensure a successful transition to further study. Every year it welcomes international students from over forty countries into the College. 

The College’s goal is to prepare students for success at university. Students studying at CIE will benefit from small-class sizes and one-on-one support to gain the English and academic skills required to thrive at university and complete a degree with confidence. 

College students will have access to all the exceptional facilities and services at the University. This includes seven state-of-the-art libraries holding 1.3 million resources, over 100 clubs and societies, free career counselling and a Centre for Teaching and Learning that provides drop-in sessions and academic workshops. 

The College is located in Newcastle, the second largest city in NSW and the seventh largest city in Australia, just 160 kilometres north of Sydney. The University of Newcastle College of International Education offers a range of pathway programs: 

Foundation Studies 

This 8, 11 or 12-month program equips students for university study, both academically and socially. It prepares students for entry to Year 1 of more than 110 undergraduate degrees at the University of Newcastle. 

Foundation Studies in Medicine 

This program is a pathway to the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle, Australia. It can be completed in 11 months. This is one of a handful programs of its type in Australia. Successful applicants will receive a packaged offer for both Foundation Studies in Medicine and the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine. Progression rules do apply.  

Degree Transfer Programs 

The standard and extended Degree Transfer programs are designed for students who have completed 12 years of schooling in their home country, and provides a pathway into the second year of selected bachelor's degrees at the University of Newcastle, Australia. They are available in six different streams: business, commerce, construction management, engineering, information technology, and media and communication. 

Pre-Master’s Program 

This program provides a pathway to selected master's degrees. This program is taught over two trimesters. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive up to 30 credit points, allowing them to jump straight into the second trimester of their master’s degree. 

English Language Programs 

The College also offers English Language Programs, including English Language Bridging Program (ELBP) and Study Tours. ELBP, delivered at the Callaghan campus, develops the academic English language skills required for entry into a variety of programs offered at the 

college and the university. Bespoke Study Tour programs are tailored to meet the specific needs of partner institutions and student cohorts.
