What will I learn?

From ensuring the safe operation of medical equipment, to designing and developing innovative medical devices, you’ll apply your engineering expertise to improve global health outcomes. QUT staff, students and alumni are leaders in the dynamic field of medical engineering. Some of our graduates who have gone on to achieve amazing things include Daniel Timms, founder of the world’s first artificial heart, and Chris Jeffries, founder and CEO of medical device company Field Orthopaedics. You’ll develop your skills in our dedicated Biomedical Engineering Lab, where you’ll be taught by Australia’s leading biomedical engineers who’ll share their latest research and innovations as they’re being developed. You’ll then apply what you learn through exclusive work placements and exciting research projects with our clinical and industry partners, including Brisbane’s biggest hospitals and medical device start-ups. This includes taking a real-life problem and working with your peers over a semester to develop a solution. With sought-after skills and experience, you can choose to work in Brisbane’s vibrant and growing health and medical tech industry, or explore opportunities in diverse roles overseas. Medical engineers design, manufacture and maintain medical equipment that empowers doctors and medical scientists to improve health outcomes and save lives. As a medical engineer, you may design innovative medical devices such as artificial limbs and bionic implants, or develop improved monitoring and diagnostic equipment that will help diagnose illnesses faster.
