What will I learn?

The study of philosophy introduces students to the main currents of intellectual history and provides a basis for a critical understanding of their own ideas. Philosophy is central to a sound liberal arts education. StFX offers both advanced major and honours programs for those who wish to study philosophy in depth, and major and honours students aspiring to further study have been accepted at some of the best postgraduate institutions in the world. At the same time, students are encouraged to take one or more courses in philosophy to complement their concentrations in other disciplines. Systematic courses are offered in all the main areas of the discipline and the history of philosophy is studied intensively. The Department of Philosophy maintains close contact with its students and the University's Philosophy Club is very active. Organized and run by students, its objectives are to foster an interest in philosophy as a way of life, following Socrates' admonition that "the unexamined life is not worth living" to provide tutoring to anyone enrolled in philosophy courses who desires it and to provide a nurturing atmosphere for discussion. Numerous informal gatherings also enable students to meet and talk with guest lecturers and department staff. Normally a minimum of 12 credits in the History of Philosophy. (i) To fulfill this requirement, at least 6 credits will be taken from the ancient and mediaeval periods and at least 6 credits from the modern and contemporary periods. (b) Normally a minimum of 12 credits at the 300/400 level. (c) Overall course selection must be approved by an advisor assigned by the Department.

For high school students, the minimum admission requirements include an overall average of 70% in Grade 12, with no grade below 65%, in each of the required subjects. Admissions to limited enrolment programs is competitive, meeting the minimum average does not guarantee admission. Please note, students who are currently in grade 12, applying for early admission, must have the program requirements in grade 11, and be registered in the program prerequisites in grade 12, to be eligible for an early offer. Otherwise, offers will be made after receipt of final first term grade 12 transcript.

*There may be different IELTS requirements depending on your chosen course.
