Programme overview

This programme is designed for those who want to become a qualified social worker. If you already hold a bachelors degree with study in a relevant discipline such as social science, sociology, psychology, health science or human services then this programme can offer you a two-year pathway into the profession.

You will gain essential knowledge and understanding of the values, theories and interventions that underpin social work practice. The programme will teach the skills to be a critical and reflective practitioner who is able to contribute to any field of social work practice.

The two-year programme includes lectures, discussion, student presentations, skills laboratories, group work, individual research and investigation, practicum placements and self-directed study.

The strong practical focus to this programme will enable you to participate in 120 days of supervised practicum work in the community.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Admission to a 120 point Masters degree: Normally this requires a completed bachelor honours degree or postgraduate diploma from New Zealand, or an acceptable equivalent postgraduate qualification from a recognised university (or similar) overseas. Admission to a 180 point Masters degree: This normally requires a completed bachelor degree or postgraduate certificate from New Zealand, or an acceptable equivalent qualification from a recognised university (or similar) overseas. Previous work experience may be taken into account. Admission to a 240 point Masters degree: This normally requires a completed bachelor degree from New Zealand, or an acceptable equivalent qualification from a recognised university (or similar) overseas. Previous work experience may be taken into account. GPE - Grade Point Equivalent: 4.0; IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 and no bands less than 6.0; Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 90 and written score of 21; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 68 and a writing score of 21; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 176 and no bands below 169; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58 and no PTE Communicative score below 50; Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP): Grade of B-; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85

For international students

You must have completed an undergraduate degree at a recognised university.

You must have completed a significant number of courses in social sciences subjects such as sociology, population health, psychology or youth work.

You will need a minimum GPE of 5.0 in your final year of study.

IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 7.0 and No bands less than 7.0.
