What will I learn?

Become a skilled engineer able to develop the computer systems of the future with BSc Computer Engineering at Birmingham. As our programme sits across Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, you'll get the best of both disciplines. Study with us and you’ll learn how to invent, implement and manage computer-based systems. From data structures and algorithms to operating systems and the internet of things, you’ll be able to choose from roles in a huge range of sectors. With a combination of theoretical and practical learning, you’ll discover how to design and implement algorithms, understand advanced programming features and work on the Internet of Things. Begin with the fundamentals of computing so you can specialise in areas that most interest you. You’ll build creative, technical, analytical and decision-making skills. Study in our state-of-the-art building with a Design Centre and the Makerspace practical facility. With our Integrated Design Projects, you can work alongside mechanical and civil engineers to invent, design and manage technologies and their applications. You’ll graduate with interdisciplinary experience ready to tackle engineering challenges in a variety of careers. You'll receive plenty of feedback to help you progress, ranging from written feedback on your assessments to class feedback sessions and discussions with your tutor. The feedback will highlight the positives of your work as well as any areas that need more attention. You'll be assigned a personal tutor who'll remain with you throughout your studies to help you in three important areas: supporting your academic progress, developing transferable skills and dealing with any welfare issues. You'll also need to undertake a considerable amount of self study. It's an essential part of the programme, which requires self motivation and enthusiasm for your subject. It also allows you to pursue your own lines of enquiry and become an independent thinker.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants must achieve AAB at A Level, including Mathematics. For the International Baccalaureate, a score of 6,6,5 at Higher Level (including Mathematics) with a total of 32 points overall is required. BTEC qualifications are considered, subject to sufficient Mathematics content and successful completion of a Mathematics Aptitude test. The BTEC Extended Diploma will be considered for BEng programmes with grades of D*D*D* plus Distinction in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, subject to the aptitude test. The BTEC Diploma may be accepted in combination with A Levels, with grades of D*D* plus B, provided Mathematics is included either in the A Level or the BTEC units, and the aptitude test is passed. The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma may be considered alongside two A Levels, with grades of D* plus A B, again requiring Mathematics content and successful completion of the aptitude test. General Studies is not normally accepted as one of the three A Levels, though a good performance may be considered if the offer conditions are narrowly missed.
