What will I learn?

About this courseCombine your passion for history with French, German or Spanish. By studying a modern language you'll also learn about and experience another culture. You can choose a language you have not studied. You'll get extra hours of teaching and funding for a language course abroad at the end of year 1 to make fast progress.You'll build study and communication skills that are vital for success in the world of work. These include analysing and assessing a wide variety of viewpoints, presenting arguments in speech and writing, working independently and in cooperation with others, developing your ability to speak, read and write in your chosen language, learning how to do primary research by applying of a range of concepts and methods.Key features of the course- Join a department ranked 10th for History research quality in the Complete University Guide, 2026.- Learn from experts from our History and Languages departments.- Choose from a wide range of topics including learning a language as part of this Joint Honours Degree.- Access to digital humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting-edge technologies including virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.- Spend a year abroad on a placement in either a workplace, the British Council or at a partner university. Entry requirements

For international students

A-levels: AAB including an essay writing subject*. International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass with 34 points overall including 17 at Higher Level with 5 in an essay writing subject* (offers exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking); qualifying subjects include History, English, Philosophy, Politics, Law, Criminology, Sociology, Geography, Religious Studies, Classical Civilisation, Latin or other humanities-based essay writing subjects. RQF BTEC: Distinction, Distinction in the National Extended Diploma plus A in an essay writing subject*; Distinction, Distinction in the National Diploma plus A in an essay writing subject*; or Distinction in the National Extended Certificate plus A in an essay writing subject* and A in one further A-level. QCF BTEC: Distinction, Distinction in the Extended Diploma plus A in an essay writing subject*; Distinction, Distinction in the Diploma plus A in an essay writing subject*; or Distinction in the Subsidiary Diploma plus A in an essay writing subject* and A in one further A-level. GCSE requirements: English language (or English) and mathematics at minimum grade 4/C.
