What will I learn?

Dive into the religious movements, institutions and theological ideas that have impacted culture and societies past and present. You’ll be taught by world leading specialists with expertise in political, social, cultural and religious history. You'll use your degree to reflect on culture, theologies and societies of the past, honing your ability to understand different perspectives. Hone in on the aspects of History and Theology that interest you most. You’ll have the freedom throughout your degree to choose from a wide range of optional modules taught by experts. This joint honours degree also allows you to flex your credit weighting between History and Theology. Study thought provoking modules, including Auschwitz in History and Memory, Christmas and Ethical Consuming and Life After Death: What Happens When We Die? Join a vibrant and supportive community where you receive one to one support on coursework and access to talks, cultural trips, podcasts, quizzes and celebrations. Explore diverse career paths in areas such as the culture and media sectors with our work placement opportunities. Benefit from our excellent relationships with the city’s broad spectrum of faith communities and forge valuable connections. You’ll be assessed in different ways to suit each module. At the start of a module, you’ll be told how and when you’ll be assessed. Methods will vary but may include coursework (e.g., essays), group or individual presentations and projects, exams, reports or computer-based assignments.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants are expected to have A Level qualifications with ABB grades including an A Level humanities subject, with History, Medieval History, or Ancient History preferred, although candidates who demonstrate interest and aptitude for history will also be considered; General Studies is not accepted. Acceptable subjects include Ancient History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Business Studies, Classical Civilisation, Drama and Theatre Studies, Economics, English Language, English Language and Literature, English Literature, Environmental Studies, Geography, Government and Politics, History, History of Art, Law, Medieval History, Modern or Classical Languages, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sociology. Applicants not studying one or more of the above subjects should contact the admissions team to discuss their application. If not taking A Level History, a GCSE History grade 7 and at least one humanities subject at A Level or equivalent is required. For the IB Diploma, a 6,6,5 in Higher Level subjects including History or equivalent and 32 points overall are required. BTEC qualifications considered include the Extended Diploma with DDM plus a B at A Level in the required subjects, the Diploma with DD plus a B at A Level, and the Subsidiary Diploma with D plus AB at A Level in the relevant subjects.
