What will I learn?

Studying International Commercial Law at the University of Aberdeen will give you the opportunity to study a diverse number of exciting topics under the guidance of our world-class teaching staff. Our law school ranks 2nd in the UK for Overall Student Satisfaction (National Student Survey 2021) with courses taught by world-class experts who regularly provide consultancy and policy work at international level. This particular programme was designed with the assistance of external experts, including authors of international agreements as well as our internal staff at the University. With this collaborative input, you will gain valuable insights into international commercial law and will advance your understanding of the subject. The programme has been carefully coordinated to align with the competencies required for today’s international job market. The University of Aberdeen is known for attracting world-class teaching staff with international experience in their specialist subjects. In contrast to the LLM International Commercial Law with Dissertation, the LLM International Commercial Law with Professional Skills offers students the opportunity to develop key practical skills in arbitration. Students on this programme undertake an intensive summer school programme, followed by a simulated practical exercise and submission of an extended piece of writing. The School has Recognised Course Provider (RCP) status from the prestigious Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) in connection with this programme. Students who successfully complete this programme are thus exempt from some or all of the academic requirements for Membership of the CIArb.

Studying International Commercial Law at Aberdeen will prepare you for a range of careers, some of which include jobs in energy or finance law. This LLM programme will give you the professional and international commercial awareness skills to pursue a career in any country.

Entry requirements

For students from United States

Arts/Humanities/Business/Social Sciences: For entry to the Master of Arts (MA) programme, students should have a minimum of: High School GPA of 3.0 Plus one of the following standardised tests: SAT score of 1250 (post-March 2016), with 600 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, OR ACT composite score of 26. Entry to a Master of PhD programme usually requires the equivalent of a 2:1 (Upper Second Class Honours) British degree, or a 2:2 (Lower Second Class) British Degree. Bachelor’s degree (GPA: 3.0+) from an accredited university or college in a relevant subject. Postgraduate programmes at the University of Aberdeen and other British universities do not generally require standardised tests such as the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT etc. Instead, applicants are assessed on the merit and relevance of their undergraduate studies, as well as references and personal statement. IELTS overall score - 6.5, Listening - 5.5 or above, Reading - 5.5 or above, Speaking - 5.5 or above, Writing - 6.0 or above, TOEFL iBT overall score - 90, Listening - 17 or above, Reading - 18 or above, Speaking - 20 or above, Writing - 21 or above.

For international students

Students should have normally a 2:1 honours degree in Law (or another related discipline) or equivalent. Relevant practical experience in the field of commercial law will also be beneficial. Students should have IELTS Academic: OVERALL - 6.5 with: Listening - 5.5; Reading – 6.0; Speaking – 5.5; Writing - 6.0. TOEFL iBT: OVERALL - 90 with: Listening - 17; Reading - 21; Speaking - 20; Writing - 21.
