What will I learn?

**Foundation courses**A foundation year can develop your skills and make it easier to get started at university. It is an extra year of study at the start of your course that leads in to a full degree programme. It’s a great option if:You don’t have the grades for a full degree courseYou have non-traditional qualifications or experienceYou’re starting university after some time away from educationYou’re looking for more support during the transition into university study.**Life as a foundation year student**During a foundation year you’ll learn about your chosen subject, develop your study skills and get used to university life. On successful completion of your foundation year, you’ll be ready to progress to the first year of your degree course. As a foundation year student, you’ll be a full student of the University and part of our community. You’ll have access to all our campus facilities and support.**Why choose this course**-The University of Surrey provides a supportive, single campus environment for you to immerse yourself in the study of law.-Take the opportunity to get industry-ready with our award-winning Professional Training placements.-From the start of your second year you can opt-in to one of our exciting law pathways: our new Environment and Sustainability Pathway, our Law and Technology Pathway or our Philosophy, Politics and Law Pathway. This gives you maximum flexibility to specialise in an area of law that most interests you.-Surrey Law School has a close-knit sense of community that schools on larger campuses struggle to match.-Together with our active and enthusiastic student cohort, we have created one of the most vibrant and stimulating law schools in the country.-We offer our own Professional Legal Practice (SQE Pathway) LLM so you can apply to stay at Surrey for your masters and benefit from the familiar teaching environment.**What you will study**On our LLB Law course, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the main areas of legal knowledge, including law as it regulates -The functions of the state (public law and criminal law)-Relations between private individuals (contract law and tort law)-The ownership and control of land and other property (land law, and equity and trusts). In addition to these core subjects, after the first year you will have the option to study a range of topics with experts in their fields, including environmental law, international humanitarian law, medical law, and tax law, among many others. You will learn how to debate the law, to analyse its application to given situations and to apply your legal understanding in a national or international context. Further opportunities to develop your professional skills are provided through a series of extracurricular activities focusing on client interviewing, negotiation and mooting.
