What will I learn?

Person-centred experiential counselling and psychotherapy is part of the group of therapies that are based on humanistic-existential psychology. The MA Person-Centred Experiential Counselling and Psychotherapy course enables you to gain the theoretical, professional and personal skills needed for effective counselling practice. Our teaching is informed by over 50 years of counselling tradition, leading scholars and practitioners in the School of Education. Their expertise and academic knowledge allow you to see how this type of counselling can have a tangible impact on people and society. You will undertake a work placement as a counsellor and be supported by qualified practice educator, allowing you to build practical skills and develop as a counsellor. You may also engage with a wider community of scholars through training events, seminars and conferences organised by external organisations or the course team. This course is ideal if you wish to train to become a person-centred experiential counsellor and provides the necessary training contact hours (more than 450) and minimum 100 hours of supervised placement practice. Upon successful completion of the course, you can apply for registration with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. BACP accreditation, as a further step beyond registration, requires an additional further 350 hours of supervised practice which is completed over a period that must take at least one more year after graduating. We encourage you to make yourself aware of information regarding the changing nature of counsellor/psychotherapist registration/accreditation on the Partnership of Counselling and Psychotherapy Bodies website. The course will also prepare you for doctoral studies in counselling and psychotherapy or areas of person-centred applications. With an advanced education degree from the University of Nottingham, you will graduate with all the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to pursue your career goals.
