Ranked **13th in the UK for statistics and operational research** (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025), the University of Southampton’s BSc Mathematics with Statistics will give you an excellent understanding led by academics at the forefront of their fields.Statistics and data science are increasingly in demand in industry and business. Training in statistics will provide opportunities to work in manufacturing, environmental science, medical research and government. You could work on clinical trials or analyse quality control processes. You’ll graduate with a technical background in mathematics, and the statistical and communication skills needed for a career as a statistician.You'll study core mathematical topics such as algebra and calculus. You’ll learn both practical and theoretical statistics, including probability theory to understand random events, and modern computing techniques to analyse large amounts of data.As part of this course you’ll:- Understand, analyse and communicate statistical results- Learn how to model random events and processes- Apply statistical analysis to real-world data- Use our student centre, a dedicated learning and social space, exclusively for maths students- Use mathematical and computational packages such as Python and the statistics package 'R'You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops by leading researchers. Their fields of expertise include survey methods, healthcare modelling and designing experiments.Southampton mathematics graduates are in great demand. Many employers look for graduates with strong problem-solving skills who can develop sound analytical arguments. Depending on your degree specialism, a wide range of career destinations are available including mathematician, statistician, actuary and financial analyst. Our graduates are employed by organisations including Deloitte, British Airways, IBM, Amazon UK and Formula 1 racing teams and earn on average £36,700 with over **97% in employment or further study within 15 months of graduating** (Graduate Outcomes 2022-23, published 2025).

Entry requirements

For international students

A-levels: AAA or AABB including Mathematics (grade A). International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass, with 36 points overall with 18 at Higher Level, including 6 points from Higher Level Mathematics (Preferred Mathematics module is Analysis and Approaches, but Applications and Interpretation also considered). RQF BTEC: D in the BTEC National Extended Certificate plus AA from two A levels including Mathematics; DD in the BTEC National Diploma plus A in A level Mathematics; we do not accept BTEC National Extended Diploma unless A level Mathematics is taken alongside this qualification (if taken: DDD plus A in A level Mathematics). QCF BTEC: D in the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma plus AA from two A levels including Mathematics; DD in the BTEC Diploma plus A in A-level Mathematics; we do not accept the BTEC Extended Diploma unless A level Mathematics is taken alongside this qualification (if taken: DDD plus A in A level Mathematics). GCSE requirements: Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C).
