What will I learn?

The first of its kind in the UK, this MSc aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to help drive the transition to a low-carbon economy. You’lldevelop technical expertise of the emerging electrical technologies driving current and future energy systems and their role in enabling the transitionfoster understanding of the strategies and approaches being adopted to decarbonise industrial processes and learn how to implement sustainable solutionsgain practical experience of industrial applications by engaging in energy transition initiativesThe world is undergoing a seismic shift - from fossil fuels to a cleaner, smarter and more resilient energy future.Decarbonisation plays a crucial role in supporting this transition as society tackles climate change and works towards its net zero ambitions. This MSc responds to the growing demand for highly-skilled professionals with the knowledge and expertise to support this transition.Delivered by the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, this course aims to enhance your understanding of the scientific principles underpinning energy transition and enable you to become familiar with the emerging technologies and industry standards related to decarbonisation.Cutting-edge innovations such as hydrogen energy, carbon capture and smart grids will be explored, as well as the mathematical and computational models used in energy systems. You’ll develop understanding of the environmental, ethical and socio-economic impacts of decarbonisation technologies and the skills to evaluate and communicate the sustainability of energy projects. This will include examinations of the specification, design, operation and maintenance of future power networks and energy system infrastructure.You'll be given access to purpose-built facilities equipped with industry-standard tools and benefit from teaching informed by cutting-edge research and real-world industry needs.As a graduate of this MSc, you’ll possess the interdisciplinary expertise, technical skills and critical awareness needed to contribute to the global transition to low-carbon energy systems.
