A career in journalism in the digital age requires new, creative ways of engaging audiences in honest and ethical reporting.
This is the only double-accredited journalism degree in Scotland. The Multimedia Journalism degree from Glasgow Caledonian University has National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) accreditation. Your degree is validated by the best in the industry and gives you access to a wide range of benefits.
Our academic staff are experienced journalists with excellent industry contacts. Experts from the BBC, STV, Newsquest and The Scotsman frequently deliver guest lectures. Working with industry partners, you can access mentorship support, placements and extracurricular opportunities. This industry-based experience will boost your CV and career prospects.
Assessment and Teaching Methods
Your print and broadcast skills will be assessed based on the NCTJ and BJTC criteria and marking schemes. Guest tutors from industry are frequently involved in teaching and contribute to your assessment. All practical journalism assessments are submitted and assessed electronically online or produced and marked live if broadcast productions.
In year 4, you will complete a double-module professional project or portfolio of your best journalism. This will contribute the same weighting towards your Honours marks as your dissertation. You will write and submit practical journalism items at least once per fortnight, and in some subjects, once per week. Blogs and wikis are also used to build your knowledge and understanding step-by-step. These are also good tools for pooling ideas together with classmates and learning collaboratively.
In year 3, you will produce live 'Newsdays' weekly. Working in teams, you will originate, produce and present radio and TV news bulletins, newspapers and online news pages. You will take part in practical workshops using industry-standard radio & TV studios, newsroom and edit suites. Full-time and guest industry tutors will oversee your work.
