Course overview In this course you join an impactful Modern Languages department and undertake your own research project in German studies. Enjoy a full programme of research training. With an extensive range of specialisms and our dedicated research Institute for German and European Studies, we'll support you to contribute original research to the field of German Studies. Course highlights The Department of Modern Languages is an interdisciplinary hub of research and we welcome research proposals that go beyond subject boundaries. You can be jointly supervised by an academic specialising in German studies and another from a different discipline, depending on your research interests. Benefit from the research expertise of our Institute for German and European Studies, a joint institute between the University and the German Academic Exchange Service. Research a range of cultural, literary, historical, and socio-political topics related to periods from the Middle Ages to the present day. Conduct your PhD research from anywhere in the world through our online distance learning option.

Entry requirements

For international students

If youre applying for a PhD , youll also need to hold a Masters qualification at Merit level or above (or its international equivalent), usually in a relevant area. Any academic and professional qualifications or relevant professional experience are normally taken into account, and in some cases, form an integral part of the entrance requirements. If youre applying for distance learning research programmes, youll also need to show that you have the time, commitment, facilities and experience to study by distance learning. You'll normally need to submit a research proposal. The word count is typically 1,000-1,500 words for Arts programmes and around 2,500 words for Law programmes.
