What will I learn?

Research into German culture, its literature, language and film, society, history and the environment. Based in the School of Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture, our research programmes in German are distinguished for research on: Modern and contemporary German and Austrian studies, Post-war memory cultures in Austria and Germany, German and Austrian cinema from the early 20th century until the present day, Ecocritical and comparative approaches to German literature from the Romantic period to the present. We have long-standing links with other programmes, particularly English, Film and Visual Culture, History and Politics.

Entry requirements

For international students

Applicants to the PhD must provide a detailed research proposal and two academic references from their most recent academic institution. Entrance requirements for a PhD at the University of Aberdeen are either a Masters degree or a first or upper-second class Honours degree in an appropriate area from an approved university (or an equivalent qualification).
